I believe that two individuals are being conflated here: William McLelland and a brother named Nicholas. What is the evidence that the two of them are the same? I guess I might equally ask what the evidence is that William had a brother named Nicholas. My interest in this is that I am descended from that generation of McLellands thrice over. Through my great-great-grandfather Samuel Whitefield Stevenson, I am descended--as I understand it--from William "Little Gabriel" Stevenson and his wife Mary McLelland, daughter of William McLelland and Mary Ross. Through my great-great-grandmother Sarah Catherine "Katie" McLelland, I am descended again from William McLelland and Mary Ross through their daughter Rebecca and also from Nicholas McLelland and Sarah (maiden name uncertain), Nicholas being William's younger brother, through Nicholas' son William. This second William was married to the Rebecca I just mentioned, who was his first cousin.

I trace to William McClelland and Mary Ross who migrated to Rowan County, North Carolina through their daughter Elizabeth who married Moses Nesbitt. I am currently mapping the original land grants in Iredell County, NC, which was part of Rowan County in the 1760's when the McClellands and Moses Nesbitt arrived in NC.

I haven't spent time researching the McLellands other than looking at William McClelland's will, which is in the NC State Archives, and a McClelland family Bible record from the archives. I cannot shed any light to help differentiate between William and Nicolas. I would suggest you contact Joel Reese, the local history librarian, at the Iredell County public library The library has an extensive genealogy and history collection from the area. He has been very helpful to me with lookups. There are many private "surname" records, donated to the genealogy collection.
