Joel Mears has two wives right now
At first glance they look the same, but if you start looking at the multiple tree matches, something seems amiss.
Here is one of them showing her as the wife of Gallant (got to love the name) Estes Margaret "Peggy" Estes
and that one has two matches that may or may not be the same as above. Need some clarity folks.
All these Mears profiles state that they have Revolutionary War service and I am trying to find it if it is there. Haven't found Joel so far, but did find his brother James' service record and 1st cousin Moses (not his brother).
Working on it, but please assist with who his wife is. The only "source" I can find is a pretty stable family document that states this:
35. JOEL5 MEARS (MARK4 JOHN3 BARTHOLOMEW2 , THOMAS1 MEARES) was born May 1754 in Dobbs (now
Craven) County, NC, and died December 21, 1835 in Warren County, TN. He married (2) MARGARET ESTES
September 30, 1827 in TN. She was born 1806 in SC.
More About JOEL MEARS:
Emigration: 1780 Cumberland Co., NC; 1800 census Bladen Co., NC, 1810 census TN
Military service: Rev War, Pvt.
Children of JOEL MEARS are:
i. MOSES6 MEARS.
59. ii. WILLIAM MEARS, SR., b. 1780, Henry, VA; d. 1856, Washington County, TN.
60. iii. MARK MEARS, b. Abt. 1782, Henry, VA; d. Bet. 1818 - 1825.
______
I question whether the children were born back in Henry, VA, but if wife was "Margaret Estes" and she was born in SC and he in NC. Doesn't make sense, but nothing else to go on. I hate unsourced profiles.
___________
Please assist if anyone has any clarity on the matter. Thanks.
Margaret "Peggy" Branhill married Gallant Estes about 1802. She was Gallant's 2nd wife. Gallant had 3 children with his 1st wife (name unknown) and then had 4 children with Margaret "Peggy" Barnhill. My ancestor Gallant & Margaret's 1st born son John M. Estes who was b. in 1804 S.C.
Gallant died from wounds received in the War of 1812. He was in a battle with the Creek Indians near Horseshoe Bend Alabama January of 1814 when he died. This is all documented.
At the time of Gallant's death the family was living in Wilson Co, Tn.
Margaret was destitute and worked to get a pension for Gallant's service although it doesn't seem like she received one.
At some point Margaret might have moved in with Gallant's brother Bethlehem as a paper trail isn't found till she marries Joel Mears.
My Margaret is Joel's 2nd wife. They married Sept. 1827.
Joel & Margaret did not have any children together. ALL Joel's children are a product of his first wife. Again all documented.
After Joel died (1835) Margaret accompanied her son John as the family moved to Marion Co. Arkansas in 1848 where she lived out the remainder of her life.
Thanks, Roberta Hall I think that is plausible. I suspect Joel's 1st wife is unknown from how it is written and you are correct that Margaret is 2nd wife with no children. That is how I read the last entry I posted, though it would have been nice if they had listed 1. unknown wife and 2. Margaret Estes.
Thanks so much for responding.
I'm a bit under the weather today...i do have an Ancestry tree if you want to check that out.
I've spent years trying to strengthen out misinformation a distant cousin posted. He never did any research, he just speculated his own theories and posted them.
Been very frustrating trying to explain to someone the correct information which I do have documented.
