I have tagged Steven here because I received a message from the inbox asking who this John Bain Grant is and saying he is being confused for another John Grant buried in New York.

"If John Bain Grant is not buried in Hobart, NY I suggest that you remove him from the genealogy.

He is currently shown as my 6th grandfather, but I believe that everyone can agree that he is not."

I am disconnecting him from Peter Grant at his request.

Others can continue from there as I am NOT closely related nor am I familiar with New York genealogy.
Best regards,
Cynthia

A curator may be needed to assist family with correcting this line. Thank you.

Geni says he is my 1st cousin 9 times removed. You should report that person as this is a collaborative website as far as I have been told.

All I know is a basic user is unable to disconnect and anyone can add a profile/parent back especially with sources.
I am ok with that

Hi,

The standard reference for the Grant families that settled in Stamford, New York is J.P. Grant, Grants and Their Relatives (1926). I can viewed on-line at

https://www.google.com/books/edition/Grants_and_Their_Relatives/GTN...

The John Grant buried in Hobart is person (275) on page 37.

Local historians are quick to point out the book's many errors (e.g., John Grant and his family arrived in 1774, not 1777) but it remains a critical reference.

I would say they ARE the SAME person and just needs some correcting of the existing profile.

Peter Grant is showing as a son on the profile. The Peter I disconnected at Private User's request is Peter Grant

There are some differences. I can UNDO the disconnection but that won't resolve the issue/discrepancies... Let me just add him back and the close family/those with sources can make the corrections because it is not a direct line for me and I am open to discussion. The importance of sources cannot be overstated.

Cynthia,

I had not realized it until this conversation, but I am descended from two of John Grant's sons, Alexander and Peter.

My great, great grandparents Alexander Haswell Grant (1841-1905) and Julia Ann Grant (1849-1893) were distant cousins who married.

Best,

Steve

On Geni he is:

John Bain Grant
Gender: Male
Birth: May 31, 1716
Craskie, Glenmoriston, Inverness-shire, Scotland, United Kingdom
Death: April 02, 1792 (75)
Hobart, Delaware County, New York, United States

While I am a direct patrilineal descendant of the John Grant who died in Hobart NY in 1792, I have no evidence where he was born or who his parents were.

"John Bain Grant" appears to be a creation of volunteer genealogists who glommed onto this person since he was one of the few John Grants whose birth was recorded.

As I said the assertion that he was the son of Thomas Grant is disproven by DNA evidence.

Disconnected from these parents.
