Sarah Steele was my great-great-grandmother, and though she had four children with Capt. French, all the children were named Steele and there is no evidence that there was ever a marriage. So apparently she represents the origin of our family name, and next to nothing is known about her aside from when her children were born. There was also a 'legitimate' set of French children, but I seem to remember seeing some indication that there was no official marriage in that case either, If anyone knows of any details about Sarah Steele I would love to hear them.
