Do we have a standard location description format for the colonial American project

I find users enter different data formats in profiles. Not sure what a standard value would add, except clarity and uniformity. Maybe it would help searches.

I try to add or edit with this style: Jamestown, Virginia, British American Colonies. Not sure when counties became common in all colonies and states.

Are there recommendations posted anywhere on the site? city, county, state, country --or-- town, colony, country
