There are MANY conflicting claims about John Warwick and Mary Powell....and the names of their children. Another claim that John married again to Eleanor Crouch is brought into doubt with contradictory claims that it was John Warwick Jr who married Eleanor Crouch. Confusion reigns further because some of the children listed as Eleanor and John Jr's are those listed as Mary and John's by other researchers.

Historian G.W. Cleek adds some clarification as to this particular family group, thereby helping to unravel the web of misinformation that seems to be floating around in My Heritage Family Websites and other family websites.. As manager of this site, any information coming in from various sources will be noted, but not added to this site by myself until I am satisfied that it is based on FACT, with official records to back up the information. To those who are interested in getting this section of the Warwick Family documented properly, thank you for your co-operation.

someone stated Polly Powell and John Warwick were they were married 26 May 1893 in Amherst Va, but we have her death 1786? What was her correct death date?

Early Western Augusta Pioneers

state John Warwick (2) b 1745 Augusta VA son of William Wqrwick 1 and Elizabeth Dunlop

John married 1) Mary Powell March 10, 1771
2) Eleanor Couch circa

The two John Warwick's of Augusta County, VA - were there two separate John's or are we mixed up with the information?

Yes, I believe there were two separate John Warwick's
this might be causing the merge mistakes.

In the beginning of Early Western Augusta Pioneers, the author states further research for Lt. William Warwick is needed for documentation. Genealogy books are good to use for a base, but we must also find additional documentation as well.

Discovery of an Elizabeth Silington b 1702 d 1766 • Augusta County, Virginia, USA widow of John Kelse 1702-1739 works for Lt. William Warwick.

Opinions everyone, please assist.

I have amalgamated the research, findings and publications of various reliable historians: eg George Washington Cleek Sr (a Warwick descendant) copyright 1934 ; his son George W Cleek Jr; copyright 1957; Jim Veregge. a dedicated researcher of the Warwick family (16 May 2009 "Early Warwick Family Information " - prepared in association with another researcher who had dedicated years in his own Warwick research; Dunlop Family History (a complete lineage outline dating back centuries).
First of all, I believe that much credit should be given to the father.son Cleek men. They are very close descendants of the Warwick family, and of all people doing family research, their input should be respected due to knowledge of how to proceed with their investigations, regardless of the circumstances. If they are read, you will see that they have a very practical approach, and will honestly mention whether or not a particular claim has not been authenticated by official records. OR, if they have,.
The following is a general outline taken from these respected and reliable sources:
Willian Warwick came to Augusta County ca 1730 - 1740.
William's middle name was possibly 'Jacob'.
William married Edlizabeth Dunlap of Middlebrook VA. their marriage is confirmed in the official Dunlap Family history.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Alexander Dunlap and the sister of Capt Alexander Dunlap.
William had obtained land in Calf Pasture River BEFORE 1748.
I WILL SEND THE NAMES OF THEIR CHILDREN IN A LATER DISCUSSION.
Willian served in the Colonial Wars. He was listed as a Private on the roll of Capt George Wilson,s Company in August 1756.
GW Cleek substantiates the claims that William left for england, but was never heard of again after his departure.
Cleek had no details surrounding the claim that William died in 1764. So, technically, it appears that the actual TRUE date of his death is yet to be discovered.
William's wife, Elizabeth Dunlap Warwick, waited for his return for several years. She eventually married Andrew Sitlington in 1779. She was his second wife.
Andrew Sitlington died 15 Apr 1804 in his 85th years, in Bath County VA.
Elizabeth Dunlap Warwick Sitlington was still living in Dec 1805 when she testified regarding the Will of Andrew Sitlington. Records in the Clerk's Office - Augusta Co VA (Cleek)

The point here in this discussion is that it was the first William Warwick who married Elizabeth Dunlap . No where in all of the research and studies I have done have I ever seen that this William had the additional name of John. He had a brother John, who probably came with them when they immigrated. He had a son John, of whom I will discuss in my next letter.

Being a descent of a Warwick woman, I am passionate about this research, having worked on trying to untangle all of the confusion surrounding, in particular.....JOHN Warwick of Pocatontas Co (now WV)....where I was born.

Kind regards,
Mary (Wooddell) Darby
