Hi - I am a volunteer researcher supporting the Museum of Making/Silk Mill, Derby, UK. https://derbymuseums.org/museum-of-making/

The Lombe silk mill at Derby (constructed ca 1720) has an Italian worker, Ignazio GUARDAVAGLIA (anglicised 'Ignatio/Nathaniel Guardavaglio'), who is recorded as 'a native of the kingdom of Sicily' for the 1727 baptism of his son, John, at St. Alkmund's church, Derby.

He married twice in Derby, and died in Stockport, Cheshire, burial 29 March 1747 (as 'Nathaniel Guardivaglio'), St. Mary's church.

We do not have year/place of birth, but one possibility is Messina, Sicily, ca 1700.

Is Ignazio GUARDAVAGLIA a close relation of your Giuseppe Guardavaglia ? Do you have any further details ?

Regards, David Purdy, UK.

The first part of your last message, is it available online? I mean this:

Pablo - many thanks for your messages.

1) Can be viewed online - but the 'search' does not work with names in the Appendix (pp.189-223 pages are presented sideways on)
https://issuu.com/rivista.militare1/docs/post_res_perditas_messina_...

2) To download - but the Appendix pages are lower resolution and less easy to read
https://www.academia.edu/10576788/Post_res_perditas_Messina_1678_1713

I have scanned the Appendix from the printed version of this book and could e-mail a searchable Acrobat version if you wish.

Also 1784 (Burial) Nathaniel Guardivaglio (Stockport): is the son of Charles, and probably grandson of Ignazio.

Please, if it isn't too much trouble, I would greatly appreciate if you could email me these scanned files.
Thanks!

Pablo - FYI the Sicilian 'riveli di beni e anime' records [+] for Messina might contain some useful information to help trace further details for the Guardavaglia families, but the unfortunately the page images held by Familysearch do not appear to be readily accessible online:

Familysearch Catalogue - Riveli di beni e anime, Messina (Messina), 1714-1816
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/751476?availability=Fam...

But there are two Familysearch centres in Mar del Plata (Argentina)
https://locations.familysearch.org/en/ar/mar-del-plata

[+] "Sicilian riveli di beni e anime (Registers of Goods and Souls), often referred to as census records, might perhaps be best understood as a combination of a modern census record, tax document, and local directory to record both possessions (beni) and inhabitants (anime). Taken periodically in Sicily from the sixteenth century to the early nineteenth century and often written in a mixture of non-standardized modern Italian, local Sicilian, Greek, and Latin, each rivelo typically listed the capo di casa (head of household), his (or her, in the event that the woman was unmarried or widowed) household members, property, and assets."

Thank you very much! I will let you know if I find any further information about Ignazio GUARDAVAGLIA.

Pablo Carosone

Pablo - we would be grateful for any suggestions/information.

a) I will e-mail you some notes about Ignazio, which explains why he might have migrated from Sicily to England after working in Piedmont (possibly the town of Racconigi, because it had 15 silk mills constructed 1690-1710 and was the key centre for silk thread production in the region). I will make enquiries to see if Ignazio can be traced in Racconigi.

b) This record is especially of interest: the 1724 baptism, in Scilla, of Deodato Giuseppe Alberto Guardavaglia, where the father, Giuseppe, is 'Ingigneri' [Engineers]. If this is the same Giuseppe in the Immatricolati al Consolato dell'Arte della Seta di Messina 1696-97 (silk weaver age 20), then he would be aged around 48 at the time of the son's baptism, which seems rather old, but not impossible.

The first child traced for Ignazio is in 1726, so perhaps Ignazio and Giuseppe were of the same generation ? (brothers ?) Also, we would like to know what 'Ingigneri' means in this case.

Regards,
David Purdy.

Hi David,

I have sent you a separate message about my partner who is a direct descendant of Ignatio Guardavaglio who worked at the Derby Silk Mill.

Mike

Hi Mike,
Do you know who were Ignatios' parents, or siblings? Giuseppe Guardavaglia was my 6th great grandfather and I think he could be Ignatio's father or brother

Pablo

Just to note this burial below, with no baptism traced, and that 'Joseph' is the English equivalent to the Italian 'Giuseppe':

1756 Burial - Joseph Guardivaglio (Labourer) St. Mary, Stockport, 3 February

Hi Pablo, i have not been able to find details of Ignatio's parents but i know that David Purdy has done some research into this. See his latest message. When i get time I will look into it further.
