The exact date of 9 APR 1865 at Fort Gaines, Mobile, AL., is for ANOTHER Samuel Hammond, and was mistakenly obtained from the "Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865". This source exclusively lists the casualties of the UNION military. And the particular register from which the name and date were taken is for only COLORED soldiers. And so the date and site from this source are clearly for the wrong Samuel Hammond.
