The Orkneyinga Saga says she was descended from a noble family. Her descent must have been illustrious because their children took surnames from her rather than from their father. One source implies that she was daughter of Farquhar, Earl of Ross, and that it was through her that the family acquired lands in Caithness. Either she or her husband was a brother of Helgi of Tingwall.
