About Étienne Antoine Hébert

  • Sources:

The Heberts of Acadia have come from two sources Etienne Hebert, whose date of birth is unknown to us, died before the census of1671,was married at Port Royal around 1650 to Marie Gaudet, daughter of Jean Gaudet and an unknown wife, and Antoine Hebert, born between1614 and 1621, and married around 1640 to Genevieve Lefranc, probably a widow, who was born in 1613. The dispensations which were sought by their descendants suggest that they were brothers. These two brothers traveled to Acadia in 1640.

We don't know exactly when they arrived in Acadia. Some have placed the date as 1640. I would place the date closer to 1648, since Antoine's oldest son was born in 1649. There was a ship, La Verve, that arrived at that time. Depending on which census (1671/1686) you consult, Antoine was born in 1614 or 1621. He arrived with his wife, Genevieve LEFRANCE (b. 1613 or 1606). His brother, Etienne, was supposedly born about 1630 and married Marie GAUDET around 1650. We do not know exactly where these brothers came from or who their parents were. For a long time, it was thought that their parents were Jacques and Marie JUNEAU of Haye-Descartes of Touraine; but that has been shown to be incorrect.

The following is from www.acadian-cajuns.com/hebanet.htm:

Brothers - Yes ... Children of Jacques & Marie - No

The misconception began with Father Adrien Bergeron's article entitled "Deux grandes familles acadiennes" [Memoires de la Societe genealogique canadienne-francaise (Vol. VI, No. 8, Oct 1955, pp. 393-394)]. Father Bergeron tried to say that Antoine and Etienne were brothers of a Jacques HEBERT, son of Jacques and Marie JUNEAU. The following year, Father Archange Godbout showed the connection to be incorrect (Vol. VII, No. 2, April 1956, pp. 122-123). An examination of Jacques' (the son) marriage contract showed his name to be HABERT, not HEBERT. Thanks to Stephen White for sending me the dates for the these 2 articles. Godbaut's article also shows evidence (derived from marriage dispensations) that Antoine and Etienne were indeed brothers.

Stephen White sent me a letter in which he said the origin of Acadian HEBERTs can be summed up in one word: unknown.

Controversy over the Origins in France of Antoine and Etienne Hébert

December 16, 2012===
The origins of Antoine and Etienne Hébert have been studied for a century and debated for half a century. There are many opinions and explanations pertaining to our current knowledge-base, none completely definitive or satisfactory. The first three items listed below are quoted/paraphrased from Tim Hebert's Hebert Family Data Book and web site: http://www.acadian-cajun.com/hebanet.htm (c) Tim Hebert. The fourth is quoted from fancogene (c) Denis Beauregard. The fifth is from Placide Gaudet's notes, transcribed by Tim Hebert. The last paragraph is commentary.

"We do not know exactly where these brothers came from or who their parents were. For a long time, it was thought that their parents were Jacques and Marie Juneau of Haye-Descartes of Touraine; but that has been shown to be incorrect."

1. These early records suggest that Antoine Hébert was born abt 1621 and married abt 1639 (Age:18) at Balesmes, La Haye-Descartes, Indre-et-Loire, Touraine, Centre, France to Genevieve Lefrance. Antoine+Genevieve were said to have married at the parish of Balesmes church. Further, these early records suggested that Antoine and Etienne were the sons of Jacques Hebert and Marie Juneau of the same parish. Etienne was said to be born about 1630, marrying in abt 1650 to Marie Gaudet at Balesmes, La Haye-Descartes.

In 1956, Father Archange Godbout disputed the connection between a purported brother Antoine and Etienne, Jacques HABERT, based on Jacques' marriage contract. Father Godbout maintained however that Antoine and Etienne were still brothers. S.A. White reviewed the evidence, agreed, but went a step further, maintaining that "the origin of Acadian HEBERTS can be summed up in one word: unknown."

2. Another possible origin was that the brothers were from south of Loudon (LaChaussee, Martaize, etc.), since Charles Menou d'Aulnay's family had land in that vicinity. If he recruited settlers from that area, there is a chance that they came from there, but there is no proof of where they (or most other) Acadians came from. The linguistic studies by Genevieve Massignon tried to say that they were from the Loudon area, but perhaps she was focusing too much. It is probably true that they came from western France. But the lack of documentation in the Loudon region means that perhaps we're looking in the wrong place (remark by Tim Hebert). Denis Beauregard (francogene) now states that there is no evidence that ANY Acadians originated from Martaize.

3. Michael Poirier has suggested that Antoine and Etienne came from west of Loudon at the coast ... near Baie de Bourgneuf. He bases this on: - the location of the monastery of the Assumption (on the island Chauvet), which was regularly attended by Richelieu and was the property of his brother, Alphonse. - Port-Royal and the church of St Jean-Baptiste - salt-water marshes in the area were drained ... much like the dyke system utilized in Acadia - it was a zone surrounded by Protestants and enclosing Catholics.

4. francogene.com (c) Denis Beauregard (This francogene record may have been the basis for S.A. White's conclusion that a Jacques HABERT was the purported brother of Antoine and Etienne, thus contributing to the rejection of the parentage of all 3 'brothers.' Text reads:)

"Genealogy of French in North America The family of Jacques HABERT and Marie JUSTEAU [2391] HABERT, Jacques (..) * married before 1638, from La Haye-Descartes com Descartes (Saint-Georges) (Indre-et-Loire : 370115), France JUSTEAU, Marie (..) 1) Jacques, baptized 1638-09-02 La Haye-Descartes com Descartes (Saint-Georges) (Indre-et-Loire : 370115), France, married Québec (Qc) 1668-04-19 Françoise CHEVALIER, marriage contract 1672-10-22 (depositary Gilles Rajotte) Marie LECOMPTE Bibliographie : PRDH-RAB; Parchemin Marriages of ancestors of that couple: None in our database Marriages of descendants of that couple: Over 1 generation 1600-1699 = 2 Genealogy of French in North America ©Copyright 2005-2008 - All Rights Reserved - Tous droits réservés - Denis Beauregard"

Many of us seeking our valid Hébert progenitor, the father of Antoine and Etienne, do not consider the search for our geographical and biological origins closed. The search should simply adopt a new paradigm. The truest route to the origins of Antoine and Etienne Hébert is in their DNA code ~ in the males who have carried their Hébert DNA through France, Acadia, French-Canada, Michigan, the East Coast of the United States, Louisiana, and locales around the world. Progress toward solving the conundrum of the parentage of Antoine and Etienne Hébert is most likely available only through the science of DNA.

As of June 2014, there were results from ten of their descendants including four family trees of Etienne and two family treesof Antoine. Arrival in Acadia. No evidence has been found supporting the couple's arrival in Acadia. It was certainly before 1671, as Etienne's widow is listed there. Therefore it is not clear how the historical events in Acadia, provided in the timeline below, may have affected Etienne and his family.

Meanwhile, Antoine's brother Étienne, whose birth year is unknown, married Marie, daughter of Jean Gaudet, at Port-Royal in c1650. Étienne is not found in the first Acadian census of 1671 because he died a year or two before it was taken. Before he died, he fathered 10 children, including four sons who started families of their own:
Oldest son Emmanuel, born at Port-Royal in c1653, married Andrée, daughter of Vincent Brun and widow of Germain Thériot, at Port-Royal in c1680. They settled at Port-Royal then moved to Minas and had six children, including four sons who married into the Dupuis, Dugas, and Landry families. Emmanuel died at Grand-Pré in late 1744 in his 90s. Many of his descendants used the dit Emmanuel or Manuel to distinguish themselves from their many cousins.
Étienne, fils, born at Port-Royal in c1654, married Jeanne, another daughter of Pierre Comeaux, at Port-Royal in c1679. They moved to Minas, where they had 11 children, including two sons who married into the Dugas and Granger families. Étienne, fils died at Grand-Pré in November 1713, age 57.
Jean, born at Port-Royal in c1659, married Jeanne, daughter of Jean Doiron, in c1692 at either Port-Royal or Minas. They settled at L'Assomption, Pigiguit, and had 12 children, including six sons who married into the Sonnier, Mius d'Azy, Trahan, Courtenay, Boudreaux, Lejeune, and Michel families.
Youngest son Michel, born at Port-Royal in c1666, married Isabelle, daughter of Francois Pellerin, in c1691 at either Port-Royal or Minas. They settled at Minas, where they had 16 children, including five sons who married into the Caissie, Gautreaux, Boisseau, Levron, Thibodeaux, and Boudreaux families. Michel died at Grand-Pré in January 1736, age 69.
By the mid-1700s, this large family could be found in many of the major Acadian communities of present-day Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, including Port-Royal, Grand-Pré, Pigiguit, Cobeguit, Chignecto, and Chepoudy, as well as on Île St.-Jean. And like most old Acadian families, Le Grand Dérangement of the 1750s scattered this huge family even farther. ...

Person note
1-FIRST ACADIAN HEBERTs-The land of Acadia was owned by France in the 1630's. For years, France wanted to settle the area with its own people. Although they had sent men to start a settlement as earlyas 1604, no women were sent for over 30 years. In the mid 1630's, France started sending men and women to colonize the land. Among those settlers were two brothers, Antoine and Etienne Hebert.

1613 or 1606) His brother, Etienne, was supposedly born about 1630 and married Marei Gaudet around 1650. We do not know exactly where these brothers came from or who their parents were. For a long time, it was thought that their parents wereJacques Hebert and Marie Juneau of Haye-Descartes of Touraine; but that has been shown to be incorrect.

Father Archange Godbaut's article ["Memoires de la Societe genealogique canadienne-francaise" Vol. VII, No.2, April 1956, pp. 122-123] showed the connection to be incorrect. Godbaut's article also shows evidence (derived from marriage dispensations) that Antoine and Etienne were indeed brothers. Stephen White sent me a letter in which he said the origin of Acadian heberts can be summed up in one word: unknown.

Etienne Hebert came from France with his wife Marie Gaudet, according to nine depositions: one from his grandson Jean Hébert (Doc. inéd., Vol. III, p. 11), one from Pierre Trahan, husband of his granddaughter Madeleine Comeau (ibid., p. 8), one from Pierre and Madeleine's son Pierre Trahan (ibid., pp. 110-111) and one from their nephews Sylvestre and Simon Trahan (ibid., p. 30), two from husbands of Étienne's great-granddaughters (ibid., Vol. II, p. 182; Vol. III, p. 90), one from a great-great-grandson (ibid., Vol. III, pp. 93-94), and two from husbands of his great-great-granddaughters (ibid., pp. 45, 92-93). Seven of these depositions name his wife as Marie Gaudet; only those of the two Pierre Trahans, father and son, do not.White

"The Héberts in Acadia go back to two ancestors: Antoine and Étienne Hebert, whose birthdate is unknown because he died before thr 1671 census and who married about 1650 Marie Gaudet. the dispensationfor the third degree of kindred granted upon the marriage of Antoine's grandson Jean Hebert to Étienne's granddaughter Marguerite Leprince, and another for the fourth degree granted upon the marriageof Étienne's great-grandson Pierre Forest to Antoine's great-granddaughter Marguerite Hebert proved that Antoine and Étienne were brothers." (P. Gallant)

"A worthy article that appeared in our periodical (Memoires, vol. VI, p. 393) thought it possible to establish--at least it claimed--that the Hebert brothers were the sons of Jacques Hebert and Marie Juneau of La Haye-Descartes in Touraine.
"Here then in brief is its argument: an immigrant named Jacques Hebert, son of Jacques and Marie Juneau, from La Haye in Touraine, parish of Balesne, made a contract at Québec ... to marry Francoise Chevalier. This contract was witnessed by Louis Hebert's daughter Marie-Guillemette Hebert.

"Now, before settling at Québec this same Louis Hebert stayed for a while at Port-Royal, where the two Acadia Hebert brothers would live thirty years later.

"Thus the immigrant Jacques Hebert in Québec was the brother of the Acadian Héberts.

"One must confess that the connection between these premises is tenuous. and even more tenuous than one might think.

"The immigrant Jacques Hebert was not an Hebert at all, but an Habert, as a correct reading of his marriage contract proves. and if Guillemette Hebert, widow of Guillaume Couillard, appeared on this occasion, it was because the intended bride was her servant. the Acadian Héberts with their different family name have nothing in common with Jacques Habert."
