Rabbi Isaac ben Samuel Zak, ABD of Przemysl and Cracow

Chief Rabbi of Przemysl and Krakow (until 1713). Son of R. Shmelke Zak. Son-in-law of the Meginei Shlomo. Rabbi Isaac ABD Cracow was the son–in–law of his predecessor, the “Pnei Yehoshua”. According to Dr. Gelernter, who does not bring a source to support his opinion, he was the son of Rabbi Shmuel Szmelka, and the father of the Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Leib, the head of the rabbinical court and the Yeshiva of Krakow, who served in Przemysl as a rabbinical judge and rabbi. However, it still remains in doubt if he actually served as the head of the rabbinical court in Przemysl, but it does seem that prior to this he was the rabbi in a different city, and therefore earned this title as well. Professor Schorr includes him in the list of rabbis of Przemysl without any qualification. We do not know the dates of his tenure, but it is clear that Rabbi Menachem Mendel who followed him ascended the rabbinical seat of Przemysl in the year 5402 (1642).

• According to the testimony of his descendants (R' Joshua (Osiasz) Heschel Wallerstein, A.B.D. Rzeszow and Rabbi Shmelke Leib Licht, ABD Bumsla), Yitzchak Isaac was the son of R' Shmuel "Shmeilke" Zak (Zera Kodesh). It should be noted that Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke Zak was an honored colleague of the Meginei Shlomo, who was incidentally Yitzchak Isaac's father-in-law .
• According to some, Yitzchak Isaac was a son of Shmuel Zvi-Hirsch Sirkes, of Pińczów. Meir Wunder says this is wrong.
• According to others, Yitzchok Isaac was a son of R' Aryey Leib Sirkin, A.B.D. Cracow and Brisk
