About 2nd Lt. (USA) Lemuel Smedmer Eisenhower
The son of Johannes Frederick & Catharine Jane (Miller) Eisenhauer [sic], in 1850, he lived with his family in Hopewell Township, Cumberland County, but in 1860 resided with the Catherine Vanderbilt family in Chenoa, McLean County, Illinois.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Bloomington, Illinois, July 3, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Alton, Illinois August 1 as a corporal with Co. A, 1st Illinois Cavalry. He was captured at the battle of Lexington, Missouri, September 12, 1861, incarcerated at Benton Barracks, and paroled, date as yet unknown. Allegedly, he suffered a rupture when his horse fell on him, and he was discharged by surgeon's certificate October 6, 1861. He returned home to Cumberland County only to be drafted in Carlisle October 16, 1862, and muster into federal service at Chambersburg November 4 as a sergeant with Co. K, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry. Promoted to 2nd lieutenant February 14, 1863, he honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863. He is in the company register as "Samuel S. Eisenhower" and in Bates as "L. S. Eisenhower."
He married Jane M. "Jennie" Hall or Hale December 22, 1864, and fathered Mary M. "Maud" (b. 01/03/66 - married a Park), Harry T. (b. 08/03/68), Sallie (b. @1871), Myra (b. @1875), and Anna Jean (b. ? - married Benjamin Franklin Tarner). Jane died in 1876, and he married Clara B. "Carrie" Fenicle, fathering Frank Eckels Beltzhoover (b. 03/29/78) and James Smedmer Dallas (b. ?). Clara died in 1886, and he married Kitty E. Hackett, who would later apply for a widow's pension based on his military service. He died in Carlisle from "chronic indigestion" with "gastritis" a contributing factor.
