About 39th Tui Manu'a Matelita (Margaret) Young
Matelita reigned 1891-1895, the 39th Tui Manu'a, (the "Virgin Queen"). Newspapers claimed she died from a fire while she was sleeping, her long hair catching on fire from an over-turned lantern, but more reliable sources said that she died from a short unknown illness. The throne went to the 40th Tui Manu’a Elisala, of a parallel royal clan (Avaloa) who reigned from 1899-1904. He officially became the last of this royal line when Samoa became US territory in 1904, and then he became Manua's 1st governor (1904-1909). Matelita's brother, Talliutafa Christopher (Kilisi) Leiesilika Young, was crowned 15 years later as the 41st Tui Manu’a, but was not recognized by the US government, as there cannot be any king within the US territories.
