About Eirene Baroness White of Rhymney
George Bernhard Shaw said about her: "Women of your qualifications and antecedents do not grow on gooseberry bushes." Born Eirene Jones, she attended St. Paul's Girls School, then attended Somerville College, Oxford to read PPE, spent her 21. birthday party at Cliveden, hosted by Nancy Astor, who was a friend of her father. After one year in Heidelberg, she studied the New York Public Library System, came back to Great Britain, working on Housing and Homeless Policies. At the outbreak of the WW II, she joined Women's Voluntary Service, was Welsh Regional Secretary, and she worked for the Ministery of Labour to train women for the war effort. She resigned after 1945 and turned to Journalism. She represented the Manchester Evening News & BBC. In 1947 she was one of the first women lobby correspondents. She married in 1948, after falling in love with a fellow journalist. In 1950, she won East Flint and held the office until retiring in1970. 1964, she was Parliament Secretary at the Colonial Office, 1966, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. She was 1. accredited woman political correspondent, Parliament Member 1950-70, Minister of State for foreign affairs in Harold Wilson's 2.
