John Carey, 3rd Baron Hunsdon

John Carey, 3rd Baron Hunsdon (died 1617) was an English peer, politician and Governor of Berwick-upon-Tweed.

He was born the son of Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon and was the younger brother of George Carey, 2nd Baron Hunsdon and the grandson of Mary Boleyn. It is alleged that his father was the illegitimate son of Henry VIII of England born of Mary Boleyn when she was a royal mistress.[1] He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was knighted in 1598 and succeeded his brother as third Baron Hunsdon in 1603.

He held a number of court and public offices including Gentleman pensioner from 1573-1603, Chamberlain of Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1585, Deputy Warden of East March, Justice of the Peace for Cambridgeshire in 1594, and Marshal of Berwick-upon-Tweed from 1596–1598 and again in 1603. He was elected MP for Buckingham in 1584, 1589 and 1593.

He married Mary, the daughter of Leonard Hyde of Hyde Hall and Throcking, Hertfordshire, widow of Richard Peyton of Little Chesterford, Essex. They had three sons and two daughters.[2]

John Carey died at Hunsdon, Hertfordshire in 1617 and was succeeded by his son, Henry Carey, 1st Earl of Dover.

• CAREY, JOHN, third Lord Hunsdon (d. 1617), second son of Henry, first lord Hunsdon [q.v.], was deputy warden of the eastern marches under his father, and marshal of Berwick, where he proclaimed James I king of England (Nichols, Progresses, i.50), when his brother Sir Robert. Carey [q.v.] rode northwards with the news of Queen Elizabeth's death. He was much esteemed by James I,and appears to have conducted some diplomatic business between the king and Queen Elizabeth with rare sagacity and tact. His brother Sir Robert mentions him once or twice in his autobiographical memoirs, and always with respect, though he had little to thank him for in the bargain the brothers made for the possession of Norham Castle. On the death of his brother George, second lord Hunsdon [q.v.], without male issue, he succeeded to the title in September 1603 (ib. p. 263). His name appears occasionally in the court pageants of James I's reign. He married Mary, daughter of Leonard Hyde of Throcking, Hertfordshire, and, dying in April 1617, left behind two sons, Henry and Charles, of whom the elder, Henry, succeeded to the title, and became subsequently Viscount Rochfort and Earl of Dover.

• John Carey, 3rd Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon was born circa 1556.1 He was the son of Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon and Ann Morgan.1 He married Mary Hyde, daughter of Leonard Hyde, on 20 December 1576 at Little Chesterfield, Essex, England.1 He died circa April 1617 at Hunsdon, Herefordshire, England.1 He was buried on 7 April 1617 at Hunsdon, Herefordshire, England.1 His will (dated 31 March 1617) was proven (by probate) on 16 April 1617.1

• Carey, who no doubt owed his Buckingham seat to his father’s influence, spent much of his life on the borders of Scotland helping his father with the administration of the east march. From time to time he was used in diplomatic business between Elizabeth and James VI of Scotland, who is said to have esteemed him highly, and to have admired his skill and tact in negotiation. Carey is mentioned only once in the journals of the House of Commons: he was on a committee concerned with the recusants’ bill, 28 Feb. 1593.
• On the death of his father, in July 1596, Carey became marshal of Berwick and commander of the garrison. In the following January he wrote to Lord Burghley complaining of the methods used for paying the garrison—a matter of constant anxiety and irritation to the governors there. The evidence points to his having been an active and efficient administrator. In 1598 he relinquished his office at Berwick to the 3rd Lord Willoughby, and moved to the south.3
• Carey obtained an annuity of £424 from James I, who no doubt remembered his earlier services. His name is mentioned occasionally in the accounts of pageants and other entertainments at James’s court. He died at Hunsdon, where he was buried 7 Apr. 1617: his will, made on 31 Mar., was proved nine days after the funeral. It has a protestant preamble.4
