Biography

Susannah Wedgwood was baptised at Burslem in Staffordshire on 23 January 1765, daughter of Josiah Wedgwood and his wife, Sarah Wedgwood. <ref> "Susanna Wedgwood, 23 Jan 1765." England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975. FamilySearch: citing BURSLEM, STAFFORD, ENGLAND;FHL microfilm 0096876-78. (Daughter of Josiah and Sarah Wedgwood) </ref> Susannah (“Sukey”) suffered chronic ill health and was “never quite well and never very ill”. As a child she suffered from vomiting and boils, and later had difficulties with her pregnancies, spending much time in bed and suffering from what most likely was hyperemesis. She also experienced motion sickness and preferred to ride in a phaeton rather than a carriage. <ref> Charles Darwin’s Mitochondria </ref> She married physician Robert Waring Darwin at St Marylebone on 18 April 1796. <ref> Marriage record St Marylebone (18 April 1796 Robert Waring Darwin Doctor of Physic, bachelor of Shrewbury married Susannah Wedgewood of StMarylebone by license) </ref> Despite her woes Susaannah became the mother of at least 6 children.
