Emily Carr (1871 - 1945) was an artist and is known as a Canadian icon. Her modernist, post-impressionist painting style was new to Canadian art. Carr was heavily influenced by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast.
Carr exhibited her art at the National Gallery of Canada in 1927. She first met Group of Seven members at this exhibition.
She suffered a heart attack in 1937 and recovered sufficiently to maintain her travels. A second heart attack in 1941 ended her ability to travel. Carr took to writing. Her first book "Klee Wick", published in 1941, earned her a Governor's General Award for non-fiction in 1942. Carr died from a heart attack in 1945 shortly before she was to have been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of British Columbia.
