About François V, I. duc de La Rochefoucauld

He was raised in the Protestant religion but abjured it after the death of his mother in 1608. He then allied with Guise. He was appointed lieutenant general in the government of Poitou in 1614, and follows Louis XIII in Guyenne from 1615 to 1616. He was knighted by the king's orders in 1619, and promoted to camp marshal in 1621. He contributed to the victory of the royal troops against Soubise , Huguenot war chief , and was attributed the position of governor of the province of Poitou which is until then in the hands of the Duke of Rohan , brother of Soubise . In April 1622, the county of La Rochefoucauld is erected in the Duchy-peerage by Louis XIII in recognition of services rendered to the monarchy.

In 1626, new defeat of the Protestants and peace is signed, La Rochefoucauld can leave the army and join the court. He witnesses the conspiracy of Chalais against Richelieu but is not worried. He is quickly off again to war alongside the cardinal, and is particularly illustrated in the siege of La Rochelle from 1627 to 1628. He abandons the government of Poitou in 1633. La Rochefoucauld takes oath as peer of France before the parliament on July 24, 1637. He died in his castle La Rochefoucauld in Angoumois February 8, 1650.

He is the eldest son of François IV, count of La Rochefoucauld, and his wife Claude de Madaillan, lady of Estissac.

In 1611, he married Gabrielle du Plessis-Liancourt, lady of La Roche-Guyon, maid of honor to Queen Marie de Medici. They have 12 children including Francis VI (1613-1680) Duke of La Rochefoucauld (married to Andrée de Vivonne), the author of the famous Maxims in 1664.
