- Rudolf George ESCHER was a Dutch composer and music theoretician. He was born in present-day Indonesia, where his father was employed as a geologist. He received his first piano lessons from his father.
- 1922 : the family returned to the Netherlands
- 1931 : Study piano and cello at Conservatory of Rotterdam
- 1934-1937 : Study composition with Willem PIJPER
- 1935 : He composed his first composition, a piano sonata
- Unfortunately, many early works were lost when the city of Rotterdam was bombed in 1940. After the war he lived in Amsterdam.

- Winner of most of the prominent Dutch prizes for music
- Writer of poetry, music criticism and talented painter
- 1977 : the Johan Wagenaar prize for his entire work
Style
Although he lived in Java for five years as a child and later experimented with serialism and electronic music, his music remained basically tonal, influenced mainly by RAVEL and DEBUSSY. Escher’s style emphasizes tonality, and it can be compared to that of Debussy and Ravel. It includes elements of plainchant, but also of Indonesian traditional music.
