About John Berkeley, 5th (and last) Baron Berkeley of Stratton
John Berkeley, 5th Baron Berkeley of Stratton was born on 16 May 1697.2 He was the son of William Berkeley, 4th Baron Berkeley of Stratton and Frances Temple.1 He married Elizabeth (?).1 He died on 18 April 1773 at age 75 at Bruton Abbey, Somerset, England, without issue.1
He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, on 13 August 1713.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Stockbridge between 1735 and 1741.1 He succeeded to the title of 5th Baron Berkeley of Stratton, Cornwall [E., 1658] on 24 March 1740/41.1 He held the office of Captain of the Yeoman of the Guard between 1743 and 1746.1 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 13 February 1752.1 He held the office of Treasurer of the Household between 1755 and 1756.1 He held the office of Captain of the Gentlemen Pensioners between 1756 and 1762.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of the Tower Hamlets between 1762 and 1770.1 He held the office of Constable of the Tower of London between 1762 and 1770.1
On his death, his Barony became extinct.1 He devised his valuable estates (which included Berkeley Square, Stratton Street and Bruton Street in London) to his distant cousin, the Earl of Berkeley.

Political career[edit]Berkeley was returned to parliament as one of two representatives for Stockbridge in 1735, a seat he held until 1741, when he succeeded his father in the barony and took his seat in the House of Lords.[1][2] In 1743 he was appointed Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard, which he remained until 1746. He was sworn of the Privy Council in 1752[3] and served as Treasurer of the Household between 1755 and 1756 and Captain of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen Pensioners between 1756 and 1762.[1] From 1762 to 1770 he was Lord-Lieutenant of the Tower Hamlets and Constable of the Tower of London.[1][4]
Personal life[edit]Lord Berkeley of Stratton was married but had no children. He died at Bruton Abbey, Somerset, in April 1773, aged 75, when the barony became extinct. He devised his considerable estates, which included Berkeley Square in London, to his kinsman the Earl of Berkeley
