About Friedrich Heinrich Karl Haarmann
He was known as the "Hanover Butcher" or the "Vampire of Hanover." Friedrich Haarmann was born in Hanover, Germany, the sixth child of 7 siblings, his father was a Railroad Fireman. His mother was a rich invalid. He was close to his domineering mother who babied him and catered to him, he was her favorite. He had a bad, stormy relationship with his father. His father was a bar hopper and womanizer. Friedrich was referred to as "Fritz." He grew up preferring to play with dolls than indulge in sports with the other boys. At sixteen he was sent to military school, but was soon released after showing signs of epilepsy. Back home in Hanover, he was accused of molesting small children. He was sent to an Asylum for evaluation. He escaped after 6 months of being institutionalized. He earned his way in life through petty crimes, with molesting children as a side hobby. In 1900 he became engaged to a local girl, trying to go straight. When she became pregnant, he abandoned her for the Army. He was honorably discharged in 1903, avoiding his father, who was trying to certify him insane. A series of arrests followed, mostly for burglary, con games, and picking pockets. In 1914 he was convicted of a Warehouse Burglary and sentenced to 5 years in prison. In 1918 was paroled, and joined a smuggling ring. Also working as a police informant at the same time. He started running across young refugee's and homeless people, enticing them with jobs, money, and shelter. They started disappearing one by one. Fritz became lovers with a homosexual pimp named Hans Grans, who also was a petty thief. Homeless boys were lured from the Railway Station, raped and killed. He sometimes bit the victims throats, and most cases dismembered the bodies. Eventually the evidence led to Fritz, he confessed to the crimes in gory detail, and admitted that he may have killed 30 or 40, that he couldn't remember. Dragging the Leine River, they found about 500 discarded human bones, that accounted for at least 27 victims. During his trial, he proudly puffed away on cigars, and complained there was too many women in the courtroom. He was convicted of 24 murders and sentenced to die. He was beheaded by guillotine. Part of his body was donated to science. His head was kept at the Gottingen Medical School.
