About A.Y. Jackson
Alexander Young (A.Y.) Jackson (1882-1974) was a Canadian painter and a member of the Group of Seven. Jackson fostered collaboration between artists of Montreal and Toronto.
During WWI, Jackson enlisted in the Canadian Army's 60th Battalion in 1915. He was wounded at the Battle of Sanctuary Wood in June 1916. While recovering, he met Lord Beaverbrook, who had Jackson transferred to the Canadian War Records Branch as a War Artist, from 1917-1919. His Canadian War Records list his mother, Mrs. Henry A. Jackson, as next of kin. Not sure what his mother's first name or maiden name were. His father was most likely named Henry A. Jackson.
Jackson taught at the Ontario College of Art, the Banff School of Fine Arts, and was artist-in-residence at McMichael Gallery.
In 1967 Jackson was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada.
