About Abraham Aaron Aderem
Per Great Uncle Lou, Abraham Aaron moved to South Africa in the early 1900's. He and his twin Avraham David were born circa 1872. Avraham Aaron married Sarah Rivka Cheerin and they had 7 children. Avraham ran a small general store in South Africa, and his wife worked very closely with him. They bought grain and salt and sold locally, and in nearby towns. (Salt was a necessary ingredient for making meats kosher). Avraham was also an agent for Singer Sewing Machine Company, and did quite well financially.. The family was very religious, every year they built a sukkah for the holiday. Their relations with the non-Jewish community were good at that time. Avraham would tell his children about his previous home in Russia where they had a large wood stove for cooking and heating, he and his siblings would take turns sleeping on top of the stove or leaning against the nearest wall for warmth. He also recalled the cold winters of his childhood, where their windows would be buried in snow, requiring them to shovel a path to get out of their house. The name "Aderem" was originally "Adirim" from the Hebrew word mighty....When Avraham immigrated to South Africa, the name was changed by the immigration official to Aderem, which the family kept.
