About Abraham Dan
GEDCOM Note
According to Roslyn Hoffman, the family's name was originally Danapolsky in Russia, shortened to Dann in America. However, in a telephone interview with Laura C. Katz on November 3, 1999, Abraham's grandson David Rubin said that Abraham's name was actually Abba Bzael Dan (no final "n"). He went from his birthplace of Kovno, Lithuania to study at the yeshiva in Smela, where he met his future wife. They settled there and began their family. At the time of the 1910 Census, the Danns lived at 124 Moore Street. Jennie Stark boarded with them. According to Todd Lerner in an email to LCK on September 22, 2011, Abraham picked up his grandmother Ida Frank as well as her sister at Ellis Island in 1913 when they came to America. They later moved to 463 Hancock Street in what is now the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn. Abraham's granddaughter Roslyn Hoffman remembers him having asthma and having trouble breathing. She also remembers attending his funeral (in 1931) when she was a young girl.
