About Abraham Leatherman
Abraham and Mary had been married 66 years and they were buried in the same grave. At the age of 18 years Abraham took up farming near Greencastle, Ind. where he remained until 1835 then took up his residence in Cook Co., Ill. where he pre-empted 400 acres of land which he bought later when it was put on the market. He sold this land in 1865. The farm was known as Leatherman's Hill and the famous hostelry he kept was know as Leatherman's Inn. When he retired from active business life in 1866 he bought a small tract of land upon which he lived until 1885 then built himself a home in Elgin, ILL., beside that of his son Abraham, where he remained until his death. he was a large man, six feet tall, and was of a genial temperament. In politics he was a democrat. Bapt. Farmer in Ind. and ILL. Children where: William, David, Sarah, Frederick, Jane, John, Elizabeth, Evin, and Abraham. Mr Leatherman was born in Kentucky, raised in Louisville. As a young man he moved to Indiana, and there married Mary Dewees (or Duese) on 14 Mar 1822. In 1835, Abraham moved his family to Hanover township in Cook Co, IL and engaged in farming and operating Leatherman's Inn until 1866 when he retired. In 1885, he moved to Elgin until his death.
Children were: William (7 Jan 1823 - 28 Jan 1867), died of smallpox while serving in the Civil War, Co I, 113 Ill Inf.
David (25 Oct 1925 - 12 May 1889 in Kansas City, MO)
Sarah (26 Oct 1826 - ?), married David Longley and they settled in Iowa.
Frederick (5 Nov 1828 - 1852 in California), moved there for the gold rush, reportedly murdered in a robbery.
Jane (23 Nov 1930 - ?), married Seth Stowell; they lived in Spring Brook, IL, then later moved to Nebraska.
John (7 Jan 1833 - ?) was a farmer near Watseka, IL. Also, a Civil War veteran Co F, 113 Ill Inf. Find A Grave Memorial# 19308894
Elizabeth (9 Jul 1835 - ) married Joseph McChesney, lived in Glen Ellyn, IL.
