Abraham McDowell, b. 1648 in New Galloway, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland left Scotland with his father (Joseph "The Calvinist" McDowell and family during the period of the English Civil Wars. The name McDowell is a modification of the Gaelic Mac Dhghall, or MacDougal, meaning "son or descendant of the dark stranger or Dane". The name was given over ten centuries ago to Norse settlers in Galloway, Scotland and the descendants of a son of Prince Fergus and Princess Elizabeth of Galloway, daughter of King Henry I of England.
