About Joseph The Calvinist McDowell
Joseph "The Calvinist" McDowell aka McDowall of Scotland, in order to escape the forces of Oliver Cromwell during the Civil War (called Bishop's or Presbyterian War), fled New Galloway, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland with his family. Originally from the area of Loch Etive on whose shores lies Dunstaffnage Castle - ancient home of the MacDougalls, the descendants of King Somerled. Dunstaffnage Castle on Loch Etive lies just outside of present day Oban in western Scotland. It is said that Joseph and his family (including son Abraham, born 1648 in Scotland) crossed the Irish Sea in small boats and settled in Northern Ireland. In the book "Americans of Gentle Birth and Their Ancestors", this specific McDowell family was described as the "descendants of Somervil (Somerled)...from the historic race of Dowall, sprung from Dougall and from intermarriage with the Campbells of Argyll and Douglasses of Galloway, and was reckoned among the most powerful of the warlike families that fought in the Presbyterian Wars under the leadership of the Campbells." Children: 1. Abraham McDowell b. 1648 New Galloway, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Sep 29 2021, 19:25:33 UTC
