Listed on the 1880 Marion County, Alabama census, (Township 11, Beat 10). Son of Calvin and Lavinia Ann Matthews Miles (buried in Holcombe Cemetery, Marion County, Alabama. Grandson of William James Miles and Mary Reden Miles (buried in Miles Cemetery, Marion County, Alabama. Great Grandson of Leonard Miles who appeared on the first U.S. Census in South Carolina. Leonard Miles was a Revolutionary War veteran and is buried in Lincoln County, Tennessee. The Miles family, having descended from an ancestor who fought to keep the Union together, did not support the confederacy. In fact, the northwest corner of Alabama wanted to secede from Alabama when Alabama decided to secede from the United States. Abe's father, Calvin, was conscripted (against his will) to serve in the Confederate Army. Incensed over this, three of his brothers joined the Union Army. Abe's father in law, William Ganes Beauchamp, voluntarily served in the Confederate Army.
