Biography Abraham Smith

Court record: In 1712, Humphrey Underhill reported that "Abraham Smith, the oldest of the children, is willing to live with his uncle, George Lane." This was recorded with the Court after the death of Abraham Smith's widow, Anna Bassett, in protecting the "orphans" of the estate. It was claimed that Arnold Bassett, her second husband, was "endeavoring to destroy ye estate of said Abraham Smith..." The court ordered Samuel Purdy, make an inventory of ye estate for the benefit of ye orphans. "Special Court, June 25, 1712/11." (White Plains Land Records, Liber D, p. 19).[1]

County record: 20 March 1746/7 a highway laid out beginning at Kerkun's (Kirkham) Mill so marked out by trees to Peekskill Hollow hence to Abraham Smiths from hence to the highway - 4 rods wide. Abraham Smith is said to have come to this part of the county about 1720. He settled on a tract of land one mile square, on the east side of what was afterward the Beverly Robinson lot. Here he lived and died and his children after him, as tenants of Beverly Robinson, and after the Revolution, when the estate of Colonel Robinson was confiscated and sold, they became the owners, by deed from the commissioners of forfeiture. Will dated April 7, 1764 as recorded in Dutchess County, Liber A, of Wills, page 46, names wife, Margaret. son Abraham not yet 21,- daughters, Bethiah Hill,- wife of William Hill, Mary Griffin, Ann Hedden.- Charity Farenton, Jemima Covert, and grandson Silvanus Covert. Joseph Lane and Margaret Smith, his widow, are named as executors. Among the children of Ann (Smith) Hedden (Hadden),- her son was Abraham Smith Hedden, who was commissioned, Feb. 27, 1779, as Captain in Colonel Samuel Drake's regiment Westchester County militia (see N. Y. in the Rev.) ; he had a son Gilbert, who m. Deborah Bartow, and a daughter Sarah, who m. Stephen Crane, Nov. 21, 1792.[4]

Suggestion from the abstract of his will that Margaret was his second wife, perhaps son Abraham by her and the other children by first wife.
