About (Acting Assistant Surgeon), Dr. Carlos Emory Hait, (USA)

An exhaustive search of records in Clyde, Wayne City New York did not reveal the parentage of Carlos Emory Hait but yielded two siblings, an older brother William born in 1824 and a younger sister Hempsey Ann Hait, January 12, 1831. Carlos Mother died when he was just five and at seven (1835) he was sent to live in Pontiac, Michigan with his Aunt Mable (Strong) Griffing and Uncle Joseph B. Griffing. He was now separated from all his direct family and seemed to readily accept them as substitute parents even using their last name “Griffing” as the middle name of his first-born son. Up on the death of his Uncle Joseph, he arranged for his Auntie Griffing to live with or near him the rest of his life. Walter Griffing Hait was born on December 6th, 1856 to Carlos and his wife Jerusha Tuttle who died just three years after they were married. Carlos left young Walter with Jerusha’s parents Joseph and Eliza (Horton) Tuttle in McHenry, Ill in order to attend medical school in Keokuk, IA. His brother William and his sister Hepsey Ann (Haight) Adams now a widow were living nearby in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Carlos received his medical degree on March 2, 1863. After graduation, Dr. Carlos Hait volunteered to serve in the Grand Army of the Republic (North) as an Acting Assistant Surgeon on November 25, 1863 at Washington General Hospital in Memphis. TN. On March 23rd, 1864, Dr Carlos Hait was transferred to the Small Pox Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. While on duty at the hospital he contracted bronchitis, rheumatism, diseases of the kidney along with heart and sympathetic limb trouble which would afflict him the rest of his life. He was relieved from duty in the Army on January 11, 1865 and discharged on the 28th.
Dr. Carlos Hait left the home of the Tuttle’s in McHenry, IL with his son and traveled to Hubbardson, North Twp. Ionia, MI. where he established a medical practice. While visiting Auntie Griffing, he met a widow named Elizabeth (Bennett) Richardson and they married on New Year’s Eve, 1868. In 1869 he entered into a medical partnership with Dr. Jerome Richardson in Hubbardston, Ionia City. MI. He soon brought his Auntie Griffing to live near him. When his partnership with Richardson dissolved in 1877, he moved Auntie Griffing next door to the family.
John Murray Tuttle, his first wife Jerusha’s brother moved to Chase County, Kansas in 1869 with his father Joseph B. Tuttle, where he purchased 240 acres and farmed it for two years. Two years later in September 1872, he rented the farm and moved to Cottonwood Falls. In 1874, Joseph B. Tuttle died and was buried in Prairie Grove Cemetery. Carlos Hait attended the funeral with his son Walter age, aged 18, who hade received a small inheritance from his grandfathers estate. Carlos sold his property in Michigan in March 12th, 1878 and arrived in Cottonwood Falls, with son Walter now 22, his wife Elizabeth and “Auntie Griffin”. Dr. Carlos Hait quickly established himself as a physician and pharmacist to the local residents. He opened the “Little drug Store” on Broadway dispensing his own concoctions of drugs and remedy’s. He purchased several lots near Friend and Pine Streets and went about approving the appearance of the community with numerous tree plantings.

As part of his medical practice, he served as County Coroner, Medical Examiner, Health Officer for Chase County, Kansas and as juror in insanity cases.

He served the Cottonwood Falls community for 15 years, much of it in declining health due to Civil war related illnesses. His beloved Auntie Griffing who had raised him died on February 16, 1893 at the age of 93. He would follow her just two months later on April 8, 1893. Leaving his only son Walter Griffing Hait.
