There was a large and aristocratic assembly on Friday afternoon, 9 June 1893, at the fashionable Church of St Stephen's Gloucester Road, Gloucester Road, South Kensington, London SW7 4RL 51.4957, -0.1836, which was choicely decorated with table plants artistically arranged, the occasion being the wedding of Mr James Herschell Gully, barrister-at-law, elder son of Mr William Court Gully, Q.C., and M.P. for the city of Carlisle in the Gladstonian interest, and Recorder of Wigan, and Mrs W. C. Gully of 96 Harley Street, London, W., and Miss Ada Isabel Pirie, youngest daughter of Mr Alexander George Pirie of Leckmelm, Loch Broom, Ross-shire IV23 2RL 57.86556, -5.09667, North Britain [N.B.], and 26 Queen's Gate, S.W.
The bride was given away by father, and the bridegroom was attended by his brother, Mr Edward Gully, "best man."
There were four bridesmaids — Miss Pirie (sister of the bride), Miss Norah Gully, Miss Shelley Gully (sister of the bridegroom), and Miss Lewis (daughter of Sir George Lewis), who were elegantly attired in gowns of pink shot figured silk of unique design, with brown silk bodices covered with guipure lace, and sleeves of the same material as their skirts. They also wore Panama hats, with pink roses and ribbons en suite. The bridegroom's presents to them were pearl heart brooches, and each carried a neat bouquet of pink roses with trails suite. A small train-bearer, Miss Philby, a niece of the bride, followed the bride, charmingly attired in a white satin empire gown, trimmed with handsome lace. She also wore a white leghorn hat, ornamented with white ostrich plumes.
The bride selected a wedding gown of white duchesse satin, empire style, elegantly trimmed with old duchesse lace, and full court train from both shoulder and waist. The bodice was also arranged with epaulettes of the same lace, and full puffed sleeves. Her fine tulle veil covered a neat tiara of real orange blossoms. She wore no jewellery, and carried a choice bridal bouquet of white exotics in foliage.
The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. J. Bridge Philby, M.A., vicar of Dulverton, Somerset, brother-in-law of the bride, assisted by the Rev. J. P. Walde, M.A., vicar of St Stephen's.
