1906 death of Barbara Hill Pirie, [maiden surname] Watson, aged 61 [born about 1845], registered district: Newhills

Tribute by Rev. Dr Wiseman.

In [St. Machar's Scottish Episcopal Church, 40 Old Meldrum Road, Bucksburn, Aberdeen AB21 9DU 57.1786172, -2.1710069], where an impressive service was held on Saturday, 21 July 1906, in connection with the funeral of Mrs Pirie, Stoneywood House, the following allusion was made to the deceased lady by Rev. Dr Wiseman at the forenoon service yesterday Sunday, 22 July 1906:

In Mrs Barbara Hill Pirie we have lost a lady who has for many years occupied and adorned a conspicuous position in the life of this district. It is no light task to live up to the requirements of such a station at that to which in God's Providence she was called. As the loved and trusted wife of one who had to bear the chief burden of a world-wide business, and needed the solace and refreshment of a well-ordered home; as the mother of a family who looked to her for strength and guidance; as the animating spirit of several households and establishments which it fell to her control, she had a work cut out for her which might well have taxed to the uttermost even the highest powers of method and organisation. But she was equal to the task, and all who knew her must have been struck with the wonderful precision which she attended to every detail of her manifold duties. She took her responsibilities seriously, and met them well because she did it with all her heart.

It would have been in no way surprising if one who had so much to do in the discharge of what we may call first and nearest duties had found no time for the outside calls of the general community in which she lived; but Mrs Pirie recognised the great truth that one has a right to live wholly to himself. Many a quiet and thoughtful deed of kindness was done her, of which no mention can be made, but there is one service which she rendered to the community which is a matter of public knowledge and concern. By taking the lead in organising and carrying on the work of the District Nursing Association, and giving it the benefit of her care and business aptitude, she did more than merely help the district; she taught it to help itself. The work was carried out on the strictest business lines, but the nurse knew where many a needful comfort and many a necessary appliance, otherwise unobtainable, could be had for the suffering poor.

And we in this church ought never to forget the regularity with which she discharged her religious duties. As long as health permitted, she was regularly here — here in the house of God; here, seeking in God's appointed ways for the grace which she felt she needed for bearing the burden that was laid on her.

When, two and a half years ago, she was bereaved of the husband to whom she had been so true a helpmate, she seemed to find increasing strength and consolation in the blessed Sacrament. In the communion of the Church on earth she yearned for a fuller realisation of the communion of all faithful souls in Christ, and came again an again to the early services at an hour when many who were younger and stronger were slumbering or indifferent.

And hers was a thoughtful and a growing spirituality. She put the same earnestness into her faith which she put into her worldly undertakings. I know that latterly, by earnest thought and reading, she had attained to a wonderful insight in some of the deeper problems affecting the development of the human spirit, and in particular, into the infinite possibilities of the life after death, and she was always ready to widen the horizon of her faith by a more complete and intelligent assimilation of the full teaching of God's word. Her faith, therefore, was a living and growing thing, not forgetting the things that were behind, but reaching forth unto those things that were before. And here we must pause, for we cannot follow her now. But we may surely believe that, in the freedom from earthly limitations which she has now attained, the veil which baffles our mortal vision has for her been drawn aside, and that the clearer light beyond, the untrammelled soul will learn ever more and more of the hidden purposes and the boundless love of God.
