About Adel Kohn-Bistritz (Lazar)

Adel [Adelaide] Lazar was born in Prossnitz, Moravia [now Prostejov, Czech Republic], 22 May 1784, the daughter of Jacob Lazar-Brüll (1749-1827), and the granddaughter of Rabbi Lesel Brüll of Prossnitz. Her birth record lists her as "Edel", as does her marriage record. She was married in Prossnitz, 28 October 1802, to Kalman Frankl-Kohn of Vag Besztercze [listed in the record as "Kalman Bistriz"]. They moved to Kalman's hometown of Vag Besztercze, Hungary [now Povazska Bystrica, Slovakia], and were the parents of nine daughters (no sons).

In the 1848 census, Adel is listed as a resident of Vag Besztercze and is seen living with her two youngest daughters, Fanny and Eva. Another daughter, Betty (Kohn) Teschner, was living three households away from her. Adel died in a cholera epidemic that swept through the Jewish community of Vag Besztercze in 1849. She was 65 years old at the time of her death.

"Edel" was passed down as a Hebrew name through multiple generations of her family. Her granddaughter, Adele (Teschner) Tauber (1851-1902), born two years after her death, was named in her honor. In turn, Adele had five granddaughters who were "Edel": Adele (Buchler) Totterman (1902-1970), Adele (Freedman) Cohen (1905-1980), Adele Beatrice (Solomon) Zepnick (1918-2003), Adele Charlotte (Felber) Gross (1920-2015), and Edith (Rothenberg) Birnbaum (1924-2012).
