Emigration

Departure Records
Details not yet listed

His journey to Natal, South Africa most likely took place before 1885 (before the birth of his daughter Maria Leoticia). As referenced by a Mauritian family researcher, it's probable that Adelson arrived with the intention to work in an industry connected with the sugarcane companies of Natal (which were predominantly Mauritian families). Additionally, his working profession is listed as a farrier in 1904, so it is possible that he either acquired these skills prior to arriving in Natal or shortly thereafter.

Alternative research suggests that he may have come indirectly to South Africa via Madagascar, but this has yet to be verified.

Naturalization

Subject to being a birtish subject in Mauritius, it is assumed that he need not have been registered for naturalization. Mauritius was a british crown colony at the time of his residence and immigration to South Africa.

Name change: Parizot

It is highly probable that Adelson was of Mauritian Creole heritage, as assumed by his original family name of Emilie. A researcher has suggested that this name, Emilie, may have been attributed to his mother's forename (as was standard with some slave or indentured labourers in Mauritius). Between 1887 and 1888, Adelson changed his name from Emilie to Parizot. This fact is now attributed to the marriage record from Mauritius and has been cross-referenced against the birth register of his daughter, Maria Leoticia and of Joseph Emilie born in Sydenham. Mauritian historical research from Durban suggests that name changes, spelling variations or aliases were used to help those assimilate better into life in Natal and further distance themselves from their past in order to improve working prospects. Mauritian identity can be analysed further in the Mauritian Settlers project founded on Geni.
