Born into the family of a Lutheran pastor. He received his higher education at the Russian Historical and Philological Seminary at the University of Leipzig (opened in 1878), which trained teachers of classical (ancient) languages for Russian gymnasiums (graduated in 1882). From July 1882 he began teaching at the 5th St. Petersburg Gymnasium, teaching ancient Greek and Latin. Then, having spent two years on a scientific trip abroad, on June 6, 1887, he defended his dissertation “De Massiliensium rebus quaestiones [On Massilian controversial things]” (Derpt, 1887) at Derpt (now Tartu) University for a master's degree in ancient classical philology.
On July 1, 1887, Sonny began working at the Imperial University of St. Vladimir in Kyiv, lecturing at the Department of Classical Philology as Privatdozent (with a remuneration of 1,200 rubles per year), and soon, on March 2, 1889, by the Highest command, he was appointed Acting Extraordinary Professor at the same department. Wife of A. I. Sonny - Marta Alexandrovna Fidler (wedding: Transfiguration Cathedral in Vyborg, 04/29/1891). Children: Ada (1892), Eugene (1895), Nina (1900), George (1902). He died in Kyiv from typhus, was buried in the Lutheran section of the Baikove cemetery in Kyiv (the grave has not been preserved).
