MRS. AGATHA SCHWARTZ, VERMILLION PIONEER, SUCCUMBED JUNE 5TH

Mrs. Agatha Schwartz, 87, life long resident of the Vermillion community passed away at the Hastings Nursing Home last Friday.

She had been in failing health the past 8 months & had been hospitalized, but relief obtained was only temporary & her last stay at the Home was about 2-1/2 months.

Mrs. Schwartz was one of 14 children born to the late Anthony & Elizabeth Beissel Ficker, early settlers of Vermillin. She attended womanhood on her parents' farmstead. She was united in marriage with Joseph Wiederhold Oct. 10, 1893 in St. John's church, Vermillion. He passed away May 4, 1906, leaving his wife with a family of 3 daughters & 4 sons.

Jan 14, 1913, Mrs. Schwartz contracted a second marriage with Pete Schwartz, also of Vermillion, in St. John's church. For many years they operated a tavern. Born to their union were 3 sons & 2 daughters. Mr. Schwartz answered the final summons Feb 22, 1933.

With the aid of her children still at home the widow contunued to operate the business until most of her sons & daughters had established homes of thier own. She finally retired, a son-in-law & daughter, M/M Ernest Pohl taking over the business. She however continued to make her home with them.

A devout & loyal member of St. John's church, Mrs. Schwartz was active in all its undertakings until advanced age curtailed her activities. She was a charter member of St. Barbara's Society & also a valued member of St. Anne's Altar Society, affiliated with St. John's church.

Surviving are 6 daughter, 6 sons, & 1 stepson. They are Margaret (A. J.) Reiter, Carl & Richard Schwartz of St. Paul; A . C. Wiederhold, Othmar Schwartz of S. St. Paul; John Wiederhold of Rosemount; Bertha (John) Loesch, Lucille (Ernest) Pohl, Cecila Schwartz of Vermillion; Frank Wiederhold, San Francisco; Rose (J.D.) Enenfer, Glendale, CA; & Philip Wiederhold of Mpls. Other close survivors are 3 sisters, Catherine (John) Krohn, of Hastings, Lena (Peter) Huberty of Lakeville, Mrs. J.P. Holzmer of New England ND, 1 brother Nicholas Ficker of ST. Paul, 22 grandchildren & 12 great grand children.

The remains lay in the Caturia Funeral Home for visitation from Sat 4 pm until Mon at 10 am when final church services were conducted in St. John's church, Vermillion. Fr. Kaeson officating at the Requiem Mass & interment was made in the church cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were 6 grandsons, Raymond Schwartz, James Pohl, Philip Wiederhold, Harold Loesch, George Byers & Robert Klotz.

3 grandsons Robert & Tommy Pohl & John Wiederhold Jr. were Mass servers at the final church rites.
