About Agnes Gentry

Biography

Agnes (Shelton) Gentry was a US Southern Colonist.

Agnes was born about 1732, probably in Louisa County, Virginia, Colony of Virginia, said to be either the daughter of Thomas Shelton and Lucy Austin Shelton, or the daughter of William Shelton of Albemarle County, Virginia.[1] She married Joseph Gentry in about 1747 and settled near Joseph's father in Louisa County, Virginia. The couple had three sons and six daughters over the next 37 years. The family purchased 490 acres in Lunenburg County, Colony of Virginia in 1752 and moved there along with Joseph's brother Allen, near where some of Joseph's other brothers had been acquiring land since 1748.[1] Fourteen years later, around 1766, the family again moved on to a newer frontier, this time to Rowan County, North Carolina. They first settled at a location in present-day Yadkin County on the Yadkin River where Old US Highway 421 crosses the river.[1] This is a rural area west of suburban Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Apparantly Agnes, if not Joseph, spent considerable time back in Lunenburg County, Virginia through at least 1784. Of her five children born between 1767 and 1784, three were born in Lunenburg County, Virginia and the other two were born in North Carolina. The couple sold the last of their Virginia land in 1770,[1] so she must have been staying with family in the more settled Lunenburg, Virginia, at least during part of her pregnancies.

Around 1789, the family moved to a new land grant on the east shore of the Fisher River about a mile upriver from where it flows into the Yadkin River.[1] This site is in present-day Rockford Township, Surry County, North Carolina about three miles north of Booneville, North Carolina.

When Joseph died in the spring of 1813, she was named a co-executor for his will. He left Agnes "to have negro woman, Jemima and residue of estate after specific gifts to other heirs ...[1]

Agnes died on about 30 September 1826 on the family farm where she had lived for over 35 years, probably with her son Shelton and his family.[2] In a will written in 1813, and received for probate at the February 1826 Surry County Court, she left her remaining personal estate to her son Shelton and to her granddaughter Nancy (daughter of Shelton).[1]
