John was the son of John Cathcart and Margaret, daughter of John Kennedy of Blairquhan.[1][2][3][4][5]

He married Agnes, daughter of Robert, Lord Lyle.[1][3].[4][5] They had issue, including:

  • Alan,[1][3][5] heir to his grandfather
  • Janet

Alan died at the Battle of Flodden alongside two of his brothers.[1][6]

Research Notes
As Alan married in 1507, he was certainly born before 1493.
James Balfour Paul gives him one wife, Agnes Lyle, who survives him and remarries.[1] Crawfurd[2] and Cokayne[3] give him 2 wives and make the 2nd wife the mother of the heir. The Cokayne's 2nd edition agrees with James Balfour Paul assigning .[4]
