Alan Reynolds was born on 22 July 1878 in Clifton, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. He attended Cheltenham College and completed his scientific training at the Central Technical College in London. After a pupilage under Andrew Handyside & Co in Derby, England, and training under Prof WC Unwin at the Institution of Civil Engineers, Alan was admitted as an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (AMICE) in the UK in 1906 (signing his declaration in 1907). At the time, he was employed as an Assistant Engineer in the Railways department of the Government of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope.
During the First World War, Alan served as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers.
Alan died in 1936 at his home at 73 St David Road, Houghton Estate, Johannesburg. The cause of his death was severe brain trauma following a gunshot wound to the head. The circumstances in which the gunshot occurred are not known. At the time of his death, Alan was the Chief Bridge Engineer for the South African Railways.
Alan Reynolds was survived by his wife, Amelia, and his only son, Harry.
