Albert George Gladwin ' Bertie " was a famous attorney in Krugersdorp. He started his practice in Koster area, district Rustenburg. He was married to Engela Marie Taylor on 28 February 1930. She was last born of Mr William Twentyman Taylor, now at Kroondal in Rustenburg.
I did not know him as he passed away when I was 9 years old. I played Chess against him in the '60's, and he bought me a cricket bat in Xmas '65. I learned later that he was a cricket enthusiast, and watched the international games at the Wanderers. Mr. A.G.Gladwin's practise was is Ockerse street in Krugersdorp, opposite the post office. He assisted me with my stamp collection, as I received all his watered off stamps. He was later joined my Mr Downie in his practice, so the name changed to A.G.Gladwin, and Downie. Mr Gladwin voted for the opposition, ( the United Party ) and was an anti Apartheid activist, often writing/giving his views to the Star newspaper. He supported his wife Engela in all her endevors: garden society, women's society, Church collections, Mayoral challenges, and so on. 'A.G.' as he was also known, acted , did drama , and belonged to the dramatic society in Krugersdorp.
He was diagnosed with cancer and apparently spent the last years in and out of hospital, and in much pain. I often visited my grand mom in their house in Kenmare , Krugersdorp, as I attended Krugersdorp High School. A letter, eulogy at his funeral from the Rotary Club of Krugersdorp has named some things that I didn't. He was known as 'A.G.'. He was a Charter member of the Rotary Club of Krugersdorp, and its 1st Secretary. Also the 4th President of the Club. He was a regular councelor to various institutions, and was particularly interested in youth problems, and was an outspoken fighter for anything he believed to be right. He served as a councilor for Krugersdorp town council for a while. His personal interests included the dramatic society, a keen theatre goer, and loved reading. He loved his home life, supported by his wife, Engela, and son Rupert.
The photos I have placed here are from his wife photo collection.
