An image of this item is available for viewing (see PRG 328/14/4) History Albert Grant was a police constable and, later, a clerk of court, spending most of his working life in Kapunda. He left Kapunda briefly in 1876, following a promotion, but subsequently returned after representations from the local community who found his successor was unable to control the activities of the miners. In 1857, Grant married Caroline Gregory (1836-1868), with whom he had four children: Adolphus Gregory (1859-1859), Amelia Louisa (1861-1912), Caroline Maud (1863-1865), and Albert William Sidney (1867-1942). Following the death of Caroline Wilkins (nee Gregory) in 1868, Albert Grant married Elizabeth Wilkins (1846-1941), with whom he had a further nine children: Amy Wilkins (1870-1913), Ethel May (1872-1943), Alfred Reginald (1874-1957), Elsie Gertrude (1876-1945), Ida Kathleen (1878-1896), William Cecil Ulysses (or Ulysses William Cecil, 1881-1963), Cyril Stock (1883-1967), Laurel Jane (1885-1971), and Keith Ethelbert (1891-1921). Elizabeth Grant (nee Wilkins) was the daughter of Harriett Stock (1814-1896) and William Wilkins, Esq (1822-1904), a farmer with a property at Bugle Ranges (SA). Adelaide Advertiser 20 Jan 1911 Obituary Mr. Albert Grant, late corporal of police, died at his residence, Mile-End. on Wednesday. He was regarded by all who knew him as an upright and capable officer. He was highly respected at Kapunda, where he was stationed for many years. Mr. Grant joined the service on March 12, 1866, was promoted to the rank of corporal in 1881, and resigned on October 31,1902. For some years prior to his retirement he was officer in charge of the city Watchhouse, where his courtesy to the press and public won him many friends. A crack shot with the rifle, he was a prominent figure in firing competitions, and won many events. Previous to his entrance into the service he was a professional gardener, and all his life horticulture was his chief hobby. A widow and a large grown-up family survive.
