About Alexander "Sandy" Bing, III
Obituary, New York Times:
BING--Alexander III "Sandy,"
84, passed away at home after a brief but difficult fight with lung cancer on September 12, 2015. Sandy was born and lived in New York City. He attended Dalton and Lincoln Schools, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Middlebury College and received a Masters degree in American History from Columbia University. As a member of the United States Army, he served in France and Germany after WWII. Sandy was a partner and Director of Research at L.F. Rothschild, and later worked at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette in fixed income research. During his career, he was ranked by Institutional Investor as a top research analyst. In 1972, he married Cynthia Eaton Bing, education and environmental philanthropist, and together they raised four children. Sandy supported numerous non-profit organizations and served as president of two co-op boards. He was treasurer and board member of the Friends of the Upper Delaware River and was instrumental in an effort led by River Network that saved a stretch of the Madison River (Montana) from real estate development. He spent his summers in Montana where he broke his own horse at 16, worked as a wrangler at 20, and shoed his horses into his 60s. Mostly, he loved to go on long, rugged horseback rides with his family. His passion and excellence as a fly fisherman was rivaled only by his ability to build handcrafted, Queen Anne style, fine furniture. Throughout his life he was an avid basketball and baseball player, often found on the hardscrabble fields of Central Park. Sandy's parents, Matilda S. and Alexander S. Bing; wife, Cynthia E. Bing; daughter, Abigail R. Bing; and former wife, Elisabeth G. Bing predeceased him. He is survived by son, Alexander M. Bing; daughters, Cynthia K. Bing and Virginia G. Bing; son-in-law, Michael Padial; and granddaughter, Eloise B. Padial. A memorial service will be held at The Church of the Heavenly Rest, 90th St. and 5th Ave. at 3pm, October 16, 2015 with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Friends of the Upper Delaware River
