21 February 1587-88: Instrument of Sasine at the hand of Herbert Andersoun N.P. narrating that John Hannay of Kirkdaill as bailie depute of Andrew Agnew sheriff of Wigton conform to Crown precept under the Quarter Seal dated 7 Feb. 1587 infeft Alexander Cunnynghame as heir to his father the deceased Adam Cunnynghame of Colynlane in the 16 merklands of Powtoun and its mills and parish of Crugiltoun. Wit:- Alexander Hannay of Sorbie, John Hannay, Robert Hannay, William Hannay his sons, Patrick Hannay in Kilphillane, John Hannay in [ ] Walter Alderstoun in Polquhule, Alexander Heucherie and Gilbert Mertin tenants of Pow[toun]. 1 August 1593: Crown Charter to Alexander Cunnynghame of Powtoun son and heir of deceased Adam Cunnynghame of Dunlophill, of the 16 merkland of Powtoun. [See R.M.S. 1593/1608-4]. Crown precept was issued the same day. The lands had been resigned by Alexander and had been occupied by Gavin Ahannay, John McCarnik, John Bowtoun, Gilbert Martene, Martin Hathorne and William Brown. Under the Quarter Seal.
