Alexander Forrest was born in 1849 and, like his older brother John, was educated at the Bishop Hale school in Perth. He too joined the government Survey Department and was appointed by his brother as second-in-command on subsequent expeditions – most notably on those that linked the colony to the east and reached the overland telegraph line. Alexander also explored and mapped much of the Northwest, including the Pilbara and Kimberley regions. The family seat, Minderoo Station, on the Ashburton River in the Pilbara grew out of these early expeditions. A prolific investor in real estate and the stock market, Alexander became a wealthy businessman with interests in several pastoral stations, gold mines, newspapers, the timber industry, retail butchering and cattle shipping. The Forrest brothers’ combination of public service with private enterprise was the focus of some criticism. But this did not stop Alexander from becoming a member of Parliament and the popularly elected Mayor of Perth. Alexander fell ill and died in Perth at the age of fifty-one in 1901.
