David Forrest was the first of the Forrest sons born at the family’s new flourmill at Picton. He followed his brothers to Bishop Hale’s school in Perth and was away at school when his father’s mill burnt down. In 1878, with his brothers John and Alexander, he secured a lease of land on the Ashburton River in the Pilbara. This would become Minderoo Station and it was agreed that David, then twenty-six, would manage it. David took 2,000 sheep on a thousand mile journey to settle Minderoo. By 1884, Minderoo was running 16,000 sheep, 80 horses and 200 head of cattle. In 1881, David brought his new wife, Mary Forrest nee Parker, to the property. The couple’s first three sons died while still very young – but despite these losses the family continued to make Minderoo their home. (Donald, their youngest and fourth son, died in the Suez in 1915.) Mervyn, their only surviving son, eventually took over the management of the station from his father. David died in Perth at the age of sixty-five in 1917.
