Alexander Hamilton of Netherfield, here treated, is the bastard son of Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, Kt. It has been suggested that he is the bastard son of Mariota Stewart but the name of his mother is not known. He is noticed as one of his father's heirs in remainder on 17 September 1534. RMS 1513-46: charter number 1416

Alexander Hamilton of Netherfield, here treated, is noticed as the brother of Agnes Hamilton, Lady Dalmahoy and the brother of Sir James Hamilton of Crawfordjohn on 4 February 1575, NRS: GD3/1/1/50/8 and again on 14 July 1582. NRS: GD3/1/1/50/10

17 September 1534: Charter by which James V, King of Scots, confirms to Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, te lands and barony of Avondale, the lands and barony of Crawfordjohn, and many other lands. The lands are to be held by Sir James and his lawfull male heirs, whom failing by his bastard son Andrew Hamilton and his lawfull heirs, whom failing by James Hamilton, his bastard son by Mariotam Stewart, and his heirs, whom failing by ALEXANDER HAMILTON, his bastard son, and his heirs, whom failing by James Hamilton his bastard son by Elizabeth Murray, and his heirs: "Jac. H. filio naturali inter dictum Jac. H. de F. et Eliz. Murray procreat, et heredibus etc." Failing all of these the lands mentioned were to pass to James, Earl of Arran, and his heirs, whom failing to his brother Gavin Hamilton and his heirs. 4 February 1575: Letters under the signet at the instance of Hugh Montgomery of Giffen, son and heir to unquhile Patrick Montgomery of Giffen whereby on the narrative that his father had set in feu farm to Agnes Hamilton, sister to Sir James Hamilton of Crawfordjohn, knight her heirs and assignees for payment of feu duties, that the said Agnes had on her marriage disponed the said lands to ALEXANDER HAMILTON OF NETHERFIELD, her brother; she is commanded to exhibit the charters and infeftments to Hugh Montgomery that he may learn from them the holding of the lands National Records of Scotland, Papers of the Montgomery Family, Earls of Eglinton, reference GD3/1/1/50/8

14 July 1582: Act of continuation of the summons of declarator of nonentry raised before the Lords of Council and Session at the instance of Mr Robert Creychton of Eliok, advocate to the King, and Robert Montgomery, donator against Hugh, Earl of Eglinton, pronevoy and heir to unquhile Hugh, Earl of Eglinton, his grandsire, Margaret Montgomery, daughter to unquhile Hugh Montgomery of Giffen, Daniel Montgomery, her father's brother for his interest. Agnes Hamilton, sister to James Hamilton of Crawfordjohn, knight, ALEXANDER HAMILTON, her brother, pretended heritable possessors of the said lands and the tenements thereof; whereby the said Lords continued the diet until the 22 November then next to come and granted warrant for summoning witnesses. 2 January 1538-39: Charter by which John, Lord Lindsay of Byris, confirms Sir James Hamilton of Finnart's possession of the lands of Manerstoun. Sir James had resigned these lands for a new grant in favour of himself and a number of named heirs, including bastard sons named Andrew Hamilton, James Hamilton, and AlLEXANDER HAMILTON. 11 October 1539: Instrument of sasine in favour of Sir James Hammyltoun Fynnart in the lands of Moor and Forrest of Bothwell in the barony of Bothwell and sheriffdon of Lanark.
