Biographical Summary

"(349) Alexander Murray of Cringletie, Peeblesshire, fourth son of Sir Alexander (No. 337 above). Married at Edinburgh, 23rd December 1684, Susan, daughter of John Douglas of Mains, and had issue: -

  • Alexander (No. 350 below).
  • Archibald Murray. He acquired the estate of Nisbet at the west end of the present Edinburgh, and changed the name to Murrayfield. He married Jean, daughter of Lord William Hay of Newhall, son of John, Marquis of Tweeddale. He had a son: -
    • Alexander Murray of Murrayfield, died 16th March 1795. Will recorded 26th October 1795 (Edinburgh). He was served heir to his father 27th June 1781, and was M.P. for Peeblesshire 1780-83. On 6th March 1783 he became a Lord of Session as Lord Henderland. He married, 15th April 1773, Katherine, daughter of Sir Alexander Lindsay of Evelix.

ARMS recorded in Lyon Office, 1776. - Argent, a martlet azure in a fetterlock sable, within a bordure gules; on a chief of the second three mullets of the field. CREST: A dexter hand holding a scroll fessways proper. MOTTO: "Deum time." [Plate VI., fig. 10.]

Alexander Murray of Murrayfield had issue:

  • William of Henderland, died 3rd October 1854. He was served heir to his father 29th January 1796, and to his grandfather 1st August 1796.
  • Sir John Archibald, died 7th March 1859. He was served heir to his cousin, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir D. Lindsay of Evelix, 17th December 1827, and to his elder brother, William, 16th April 1855. He was M.P. for Leith 1833-34. On 23rd April 1839 he became a Lord of Session as Lord Murray. He married, 1826, Mary, daughter of William Rigby of Oldfield Hall, Cheshire (Foster's M.Ps.)."
