About Sir Archibald Murray, Kt.

Biographical Summary

"Sir Archibald Murray, Baronet [S 1628] of Blackbarony, 1st son and heir; was M.P. for the Sheriffdom of Selkirk and Peebles, 1659 and [S] for Peebles-shire, 1661-63, 1665, 1667 (being then called 'the younger'), 1669-74 (being then a Baronet), 1678, 1681-82, 1685-86 and 1689 till death; having succeeded to the Baronetcy about 1608; was Lieut. Col. of Linlithgow and Peebles Militia, 1669; and Master of the Works, etc. [S], 1689. He married Mary, widow of Sir James Hope, of Hopetoun (died 1661), 1st daughter and coheir of William (Keith), 7th Earl Marischal [S], by Elizabeth, daughter of George (Seton), 3rd Earl of Winton [S]. He died shortly before 28 May 1700."

"(338) Sir Archibald Murray, 3rd Baronet of Blackbarony, died about 1700. He was M.P. for Peeblesshire 1661-1700, and married Mary Keith, daughter of William, seventh Earl Marischal, and had :-

  • Sir Alexander (No. 339 below).
  • Captain Archibald Murray. Will recorded 1st September 1707 (Edinburgh). He married Naomi, daughter of James Hamilton, and had a daughter.
  • William Murray, died unmarried.
  • John Murray, died unmarried.
  • George Murray, died unmarried.

ARMS recorded in Lyon Office, 1672-77. - Or, a fetterlock azure; on a chief of the second three mullets argent. CREST: A dexter hand holding a scroll fessways proper. Motto : " Deum time" [Plate VI., fig. 8.]"
