Alexander was the son of General Edwin Clinton Wilson and Elizabeth Connely McCalmont. He enlisted as a private for Civil War service in Company H of the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, March 10, 1864, at Cleveland, Ohio(Cuyahoga County)for a term of three years. His place of birth in the Company H Descriptive Books shows Franklin County PA. He was transferred to Company A, 183rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, June 12, 1865 at Raleigh, North Carolina to complete his term of service from which he was mustered out July 17, 1865.
