About Alexis Charles Doxat, VC
Major Alexis Charles Doxat V.C was a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Alexis was a 33 year old lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Yeomanry during the 2nd Boer War when the following deed took place on 20 October 1900 near Zeerust, South Africa, for which he was awarded the V.C.
On the 20th October 1900 near Zeerust Lieutenant Doxat proceeded with a party of Mounted Infantry to a reconnoitre a position held by 100 Boers on a ridge of kopjes. When within 300 yards of the position the enemy opened heavy fire on Lieutenant Doxat's party, which when retired, leaving one of their number who had lost his horse. Lieutenant Doxat seeing the dangerous position in which the man was placed galloped back under heavy fire and brought him on his horse to a place of safety.
Doxat later achieved the rank of Major in the King's Royal Rifle Corps in World War 1.
His medals are now on display at the Lord Ashcroft Gallery in the Imperial War Museum London.
